Grosse Pointe Safety Town
Due to COVID-19 and your child's safety, we have decided to cancel Safety Town this summer. We look forward to starting up next summer!
Thank you for your interest in the Grosse Pointe Public School Systems Safety Town. Our mission is to equip our youngest learners with the tools they need to remain calm and safe during emergency situations. Your child will meet local police and firefighters, learn tips and tools to use in a real-life fire situation, and explore other safety topics such as how to dial 911, firearms safety, body safety awareness, learn traffic and bicycle rules, how to stay safe while using electricity, drug safety awareness and poison prevention, and rules for boating and water play. This one week, fun-filled program is designed so children are encouraged to keep their surroundings safe through hands on activities and exercises. For more information, feel free to contact us!Safety Town Fire Safety House With the assistance of our local police and fire first responders, the children will practice escape techniques from the Fire Safety House, a two-story, child size house that fills with artificial smoke to simulate an actual fire. You can reinforce these lessons by ensuring that your home has a functioning smoke detector and by creating an escape plan with your child. We thank our local public safety officers and representatives from community organizations for their participation in our program.Traffic Safety Our Safety Town miniature village is designed to resemble a community with buildings, grass, traffic signs and lights. The children take turns riding bicycles while following basic traffic rules.Parent Orientation Meeting A local law enforcement professional will host a safety instruction meeting for those parents with children registered in the Safety Town program. During orientation, the community helper will share tips and strategies every parent needs to know to keep their children safe from preventable injuries. Join in on the discussion with other parents and ask questions. This presentation is a great resource for families! (*Please note: You are not required to attend a parent orientation meeting. You will receive an informational email that gives a description what we are learning about throughout the week. Please feel free to contact the Director of Safety Town with any future questions!
