Meet the Board Members

  • Brian Clark Summerfield, President
    Summerfield

    Brian Summerfield was appointed to the Board in April of 2013. He is a resident of Grosse Pointe Park with his wife Emily and their three children. His oldest child attends Pierce Middle School and his other two attend Defer Elementary. Mr. Summerfield has worked with the administration on the district’s Multi-Age Program. He holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. He currently is a member at Bodman PLC and serves on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. His background includes serving as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. His term expires December 31, 2018.
     
     Margaret Weertz, Vice President

    Margaret Weertz is an editor, webmaster and communications professional. She earned her bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and a master's degree from Northwestern University. She has served on the selection committee for the North High School principal and the GPPSS Human Sexuality Advisory Board. She and her husband are 20-year residents of Grosse Pointe Shores. They have two sons: a student at the University of Colorado-Boulder and a junior at North High School. Weertz was elected to the board in November 2014. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2018.
     Judy Gafa, Treasurer

    Judy Gafa graduated from Madonna University with a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) and a minor in Natural Science. She is the Resident Care Coordinator Nurse at Sunrise Assisted Living on Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods. She lives in Grosse Pointe Woods, with husband Kenneth, 2 children who attend Grosse Pointe Schools, and a graduate from the Grosse Pointe North class of 2014. Judy was elected to the Board in November, 2008, and her term expires on December 31, 2020. 
     Cindy Pangborn, Secretary
    Pangborn

    Cindy Pangborn was elected to the Board in November, 2009. She previously served on the Board from 1995-1999. As an active volunteer for our school system, Cindy personally televised the Board meetings for five years until the school system was able to televise them.  Mrs. Pangborn is a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1964. Cindy and her husband Jim have raised four children. They all attended Grosse Pointe Public Schools graduating from Grosse Pointe South in '88, '93, '95 and 2005. Cindy is a retired Realtor who now does referrals and consulting, on real estate staging, organizing, and personal property sales. She spends time volunteering weekly in elementary school classrooms.  Her term expires December 31, 2020.
    Kathleen Abke, Trustee 
    Kathleen Abke

    Kathleen Abke is a 20-year resident of Grosse Pointe Woods. She and her husband Paul have children entering middle and high school. Kathleen earned a B.A. from Oakland University in Communication Arts with minors in Human Resources and Journalism, and an M.A. in Counseling also from Oakland University. She has served the community as PTO President, Vice President and Board Observer for Mason Elementary; was a recipient of the GPPSS Distinguished Volunteer Award in 2014; and has also held leadership positions with the Woods Shores Little League and Grosse Pointe Co-op Preschool. Kathleen was appointed to the Board of Education in July of 2016. Her term ends December 31, 2020.
    Ahmed Ismail, Trustee
    Ismail

    Ahmed Ismail is serving his third term on our school board, having been elected in 2004, 2008 and 2014.  He brings a unique perspective to our board as a result of being a student, a parent of students, a resident and a business owner in Grosse Pointe.  He attended Poupard, Parcells, Grosse Pointe High (now GP South), then was transferred to GP North when it was opened, becoming a member of its first graduating class in 1970.  Mr. Ismail has been a member of the Grosse Pointe business community for over 45 years, first at Studio Camera, then Speedi Photo and now works with his wife, Mary Ann, at The Portrait Place on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods.  In addition to his work at The Portrait Place, Mr. Ismail serves as president of the residential community developer Clarkston Holdings, Ltd.  His commitment to community service has extended to him previously serving on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Education Board and as a member of the Grosse Pointe Woods Planning Commission.  His three sons attended our schools, with two of them graduating from Grosse Pointe North High School.  Mr. Ismail has studied the International Baccalaureate Programme at the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education and has twice visited schools in China to learn about their education system as a guest of the Chinese government.  At the County level, Mr. Ismail serves on the Executive Board of the Wayne County Association of School Boards.  At the State level, he is very involved with the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB), where he serves as a member of the Board Member Mentoring team that mentors school board members around the state.  He also serves as a member of MASB’s Resolutions and Bylaws Committee, which develops MASB positions on legislative, legal and administrative issues of statewide significance.  Mr. Ismail  is the graduate of over 40 MASB certification courses in school system governance and operation.  He is the recipient of MASB's coveted Master Board Member and Public Schools Advocacy Specialist Awards.  Mr. Ismail welcomes comments and/or questions from the community.     Christopher Profeta, Trustee

    Christopher Profeta graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in English and earned his MA from Wayne State University. He is an Intervention Specialist for Roseville Community Schools and has taught at Macomb Community College, Baker College and Davenport University. Chris lives in Grosse Pointe Woods, with wife Sarah, and their 3 children who attend Grosse Pointe Public Schools. He is lifelong community member and a graduate of Grosse Pointe North. Activities in the schools include serving on the computer curriculum development committee, library curriculum development committee, Pre-K advisory committee, Superintendent search focus group, classroom volunteer, and PTO Board Observer. Chris has also been active in the community as a little league coach and member and volunteer at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. Chris was elected to the Board in November, 2016, and his term expires on December 31, 2020.
