GPPSS seeks applicants to fill vacant BOE position

Trustee Lois Valente has announced her resignation from the Grosse Pointe Public School System Board of Education effective June 30, 2016.

Board President Gafa stated in response to Valente’s resignation, “Lois has always shared her thoughts and ideas in a constructive way, and we have had many conversations over the years that have helped guide me in some of my decisions. Her dedication to the students has always come first.”

Gafa added, “I heard this the other day and I think Trustee Valente exemplified this on the board: ‘The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back of the jersey.’”

Valente was elected in November, 2011, with her term starting January 1, 2012. Her term would have ended December 31, 2016. She is a 20 year resident of Grosse Pointe Park and has been active in many roles in the community including past president of the Partnership for Different Learners PTO, a PTO Council representative, on the Strategic Planning committee, and as a member of the hiring committee for the GPPSS Director of Student Services. Valente also served as a member of the Grosse Pointe Park Little League and as a Medicare/Medicaid counseling volunteer for the Area Agency on Aging.

With this resignation, the Grosse Pointe Public School System is seeking applications for the current vacant position on the board of education. An individual will be appointed to fill the vacant position through Dec. 31, 2016, and will be replaced by the individual elected to the position (based upon the Nov. 8, 2016 election results) on Jan. 1, 2017.

Interested persons please fill out this application no later than 4:00 p.m. on June 17, 2016.

Following a review of the submitted materials, the board will schedule interviews. If you have any questions concerning the role of the board of education and the responsibilities of a board member, please contact Dr. Gary C. Niehaus, Superintendent of Schools, at 313/432-3003.
